African Stars Earn Ballon d’Or Recognition as 2026 Nominees Are Revealed
Africa will have a strong presence at the 2026 Ballon d’Or, with six players from five countries earning nominations across the Young Talent and Goalkeeper of the Year categories.
The latest nominees underline the growing influence of African footballers on the global stage, with representatives from Morocco, Côte d’Ivoire, Algeria, Senegal and Cape Verde included among the contenders.
Three of the nominees have been recognised in the Men’s Young Talent of the Year category, while another three will compete for the Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year award.
Bouaddi, Diomandé and Maza lead African youth contingent
Morocco’s Ayyoub Bouaddi is among the standout young African names on the list.
The 18-year-old midfielder has attracted attention through his performances at both club and international level. Despite previously being eligible to represent France, Bouaddi opted to play for Morocco, adding another highly rated prospect to the North African nation’s growing pool of young talent.
He is joined in the category by Côte d’Ivoire winger Yan Diomandé, who made a major impression during his first season with RB Leipzig.
Diomandé’s debut campaign in Germany produced 20 goals and assists across competitions, putting the young winger firmly on the international radar.
Ibrahim Maza completes the African representation in the Young Talent category. The Algeria international has continued to build his reputation with a series of impressive displays for club and country.
The three youngsters will now compete against some of the world’s most highly regarded emerging players for the prestigious award.
Bounou leads African goalkeeping challenge
Africa will also be represented by three experienced goalkeepers in the Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year category.
Morocco’s Yassine Bounou returns to the global awards conversation after establishing himself as one of the continent’s most accomplished goalkeepers.
He is joined by Senegal’s Édouard Mendy, another goalkeeper with considerable experience at the highest level of European and international football.
Cape Verde’s Vozinha completes the African trio, giving the island nation representation among the world’s elite goalkeeping nominees.
Their inclusion is another indication of the depth of goalkeeping talent produced by the continent.

The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony will take place in London on 26 October, when the winners across the various categories will be announced.
