The Betway Premiership kicked off this past weekend with a few surprises. It was a mixture of results for the traditional big three clubs in South African football.

Mamelodi Sundowns, the defending champions, were held to a draw at Chippa United. The Brazilians took the lead through Aurthur Sales before Khaya Mfecane hit the target for the Chilli Boys in the second half.

If Masandawana were disappointed, then it was a shock to the system for Orlando Pirates followers in Soweto. Siphesihle Mkhize’s hit early in the second half was enough to bring tears in the stands and ensure Bucs begin their season with a loss.

The other half of Soweto had to wait till Sunday before opening their mouths. Having beaten Stellenbosch FC three times last season, Amakhosi should not have been worried. Makabi Lilepo’s late penalty kick added to Nkosiphile Ngcobo’s first half goal to round off a two nil win for Kaizer Chiefs.

The newly-formed Siwelele FC, a copy and paste of Supersport United, got off to a loud and happy start in Bloemfontein with a 3-1 win over Golden Arrows. TS Galaxy were also shocked by new boys Durban City, courtesy of a two nil home defeat.

The Betway Premiership continues in earnest with full programme of midweek matches starting on Tuesday night.
