CAF has announced the postponement of the 2024 CHAN tournament to August 2025. However, the draw for the tournament that caters to locally based players will go ahead as planned.

In a statement released after the news had already spread across all social media platforms, CAF stated that more time was needed.

“Good progress has been made in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda with the construction and upgrading of stadiums, training fields, hotels and other infrastructure …… However the CAF Technical and Infrastructure experts, some of whom have been based in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda have advised CAF that more is required to ensure that the infrastructure and facilities is at the levels necessary for hosting …..,” CAF said in a statement released on Tuesday afternoon.

CAF statement on the postponement of CHAN 2024

CAF inspectors and the president, Dr. Patrice Motsepe had previously expressed satisfaction with the progress made in all three countries. It would interesting to know why the CAF experts had waited till two weeks before the tournament was due to start before advising the football leaders. Surely they would have seen that the facilities were not up to the necessary levels in November or December.

According to the CAF statement, the actual dates for CHAN 2024 will announced in due course, but it will be held in August.

“I am confident that the stadiums, training fields, hotels, hospitals, and other infrastructure and facilities will be at the requisite CAF standards for hosting, in August 2025, a very successful TotalEnergies African Nations Championships Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda 2024,” CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe said about the postponement of CHAN.
