Downs downed, Wydad downed again as FC Nouadhibou makes history
Mauritania’s FC Nouadhibou made history in the CAF Champions League as Wydad fell again while Mamelodi Sundowns tasted defeat for the first time in a long time. Pyramids FC of Egypt were the team on the wrong side of the history-making 2-0 result for the Mauritanians as Matchday 2 provided pleasantly surprising results.
Glody Likonza scored in the second half to hand Mamelodi Sundowns their first defeat in the group stage. The first defeat for Downs and Pyramids’ downfall has tantalisingly opened up Group A with all four teams on three points.
Al Ahly remained in control of Group D despite being held to a 1-1 draw by Young Africans in Tanzania. Percy Tau looked to have won it for the champions late on but Pacome Zouzoua cut the points haul to just one point for the Egyptian giants. Medeama moved to three with a 2-1 win over CR Belouizdad to keep the group interesting.
In Group B, Wydad Casablanca face a rare group stage exit from the CAF Champions League group after yet another 1-0 defeat. The Moroccan club fell to Ivory Coast’s ASEC Mimosas this time. Jwaneng Galaxy from Botswana continued their good start to the group stage with a 0-0 draw at home to Simba SC.
Petro de Luanda beat Etoile Sportive du Sahel 2-0 to solidify their position at the top of Group C with 6 points, while Al Hilal stunned Esperance de Tunis 3-1 in Dar Es Salaam.
