Highlanders Deny Benjani Resignation Reports
Highlanders have moved quickly to shut down reports that head coach Benjani Mwaruwari has resigned, insisting the former Warriors star remains in charge of the Bulawayo giants.
The reports surfaced on Saturday amid growing concerns over unrest within the Highlanders camp, with claims that Mwaruwari had become frustrated with the direction of the club and decided to step down.
However, acting chairman and interim chief executive officer Kindman Ndlovu has dismissed the reports as false, confirming that Mwaruwari is still preparing the team for Sunday’s Chibuku Super Cup derby against Chicken Inn.
“As far as we are concerned, the coach is at work. I spoke to him yesterday (Friday) and he said he is also surprised with the reports that he has resigned,” Ndlovu said.
Highlanders acknowledge training boycott
While the club has rejected claims surrounding Mwaruwari’s position, Ndlovu acknowledged that Highlanders are dealing with internal challenges.
The players reportedly staged a training boycott during the week, adding to concerns surrounding the club’s current situation.
Ndlovu confirmed the unrest but insisted it should not be confused with the coach’s position.
“Of course, there are challenges. The players were refusing to train. This information about the coach quitting is false information spreading on social media platforms.”
The developments come at a delicate time for Bosso, with Sunday’s derby against Chicken Inn offering little room for distractions.
Mwaruwari’s Highlanders journey continues
Mwaruwari took charge of Highlanders in January 2026, replacing Thabo Senong.
Senong’s tenure came to an end after he was unable to secure a work permit, paving the way for Mwaruwari’s return to coaching at one of Zimbabwe’s biggest football clubs.
For now, the former Manchester City striker remains at the helm, with Highlanders looking to put the off-field uncertainty aside and focus on their Chibuku Super Cup clash.
The club’s immediate challenge will be to restore calm within the camp and ensure the ongoing tensions do not spill over onto the pitch.
