Hugo Broos Dreams Of A 3-0 Win
South Africa national team head coach, Hugo Broos, says winning 3-0 against Liberia would be a dream. Bafana Bafana, as the senior men’s team is more commonly known, faces the Lone Stars of Liberia at Orlando Stadium in the 2023 Africa Cup Nations qualifier.
With the group reduced to three teams after the suspension of Zimbabwe, Broos feels a lot will depend on goal difference. World Cup semifinalists, Morocco is the other team in the race for a place in Ivory Coast next year.
“We absolutely need a win here. If we go to Monrovia with a victory that is already three points but what is also important is the goal difference,” stressed Broos as he addressed the media a day before the all-important match.
Both countries are yet to register any points in the qualifiers after being beaten by Morocco. Bafana Bafana narrowly lost 2-1 while Liberia went down 2-0 to the Atlas Lions who are virtually on the plane to Ivory Coast.
“If it should be a draw in Monrovia and we won here with two nil, for example, then the goal difference is plus one for us and minus four for them. So that makes it extra difficult for them to qualify even if they should win against Morocco,” explained the Belgian coach. South Africans are used to permutations and calculations when it comes to qualifying for major tournaments.
Broos lamented that had the national team scored more goals in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Zimbabwe, then life would have been rosier.
“Now that stupid goal in Ghana killed us,” shrugged Broos.
The coach wants South Africa to score the first goal and keep on going without taking unnecessary risks, and get a second or third.
“Three nil would be a dream,” declared Broos.
Bafana Bafana play Liberia at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto on Friday the 24th of March with kickoff slated for 18:00 CAT.
