Intriguing Nedbank Cup Draw
An intriguing set of fixtures was thrown up at the Nedbank Cup Round of 16 draw held in Johannesburg. With four DSTV Premiership affairs, there is a possibility of an all-top-tier quarter-final line-up as none of the lower league teams were drawn against each.
Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns travel to CAF Confederation Cup group stage entrants Marumo Gallants for a re-match of last season’s final. Sundowns saw how much of a fight it was to overcome Gallants that day in Rustenburg, so the Yellow Nation must be ready for another war.
Dondola Stars and Mpheni Home Defenders have dates with destiny as they face AmaZulu FC and Chippa United respectively. The Nedbank Cup has always been the trophy of upsets and both Soweto giants will be weary of their first division opponents after Wednesday’s draw. Kaizer Chiefs welcome Casric Stars while Orlando Pirates host Venda Football Academy.
‘The exhilarating round-of-32 fixtures have really set the tone of what is to be expected for the rest of the tournament and we cannot wait to see it all unfold during the round-of-16 fixtures. As proud sponsors, we aim to continually support the development of South African football by providing lower-level clubs an opportunity to showcase their talent in competing with professional clubs to offer fans phenomenal entertainment,’ says Buli Ndlovu, Executive Head of Marketing for Nedbank Retail and Business Banking.
