Kaizer Chiefs hit with another injury blow ahead of Siwelele clash
Kaizer Chiefs will be without right-back Thabiso Monyane for the next four weeks after the defender picked up an injury during training on Monday.
The setback is another headache for Fernando da Cruz, who is still searching for the right formula as Amakhosi look to build consistency early in the season.
Monyane has been one of the coach’s regular selections, featuring in all five of Chiefs’ matches so far this campaign. His absence will therefore leave a noticeable gap on the right side of the defence.
Chiefs face Siwelele FC on Sunday in their first match without the 26-year-old, who is not expected to return until October.
Da Cruz has several options to consider. Dillan Solomons and Reeve Frosler could both be brought back into the right-back role, while Zitha Kwinika provides another option depending on the tactical demands of the fixture.
The timing of the injury is particularly difficult for Chiefs, with the club already carrying a sizeable injury list. Monyane joins Langelihle Phili, Ethan Chislett, Flavio Silva, Paseka Mako and Khanyisa Mayo among the players currently sidelined.
Monyane joined Chiefs from Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates last season and has since established himself as an important member of the squad, making 29 competitive appearances for Amakhosi.
His four-week absence now gives Da Cruz a fresh selection problem as Chiefs attempt to find momentum in the opening weeks of the campaign.
