Late Goals Lift Gor Mahia and KCB to 1-0 Wins in SportPesa Premier League

.

K’Ogalo Edge APS Bomet in Homa Bay

At Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay, the record Kenyan champions were made to work by a well-organised APS Bomet side. Both teams defended soundly and clear chances were rare, until Alpha Onyango broke the deadlock in the 84th minute to send Gor Mahia’s fans home happy.

It is the second win of the season for K’Ogalo, who opened their campaign with a 4-2 victory over Murang’a SEAL on Tuesday. APS Bomet will feel hard done by after a determined defensive display left them with nothing.

Mambote the Super-Sub as KCB Break Mathare

Over at Police Sacco Grounds, KCB needed a late hand from the bench. Substitute Assis Mambote struck in the 85th minute, just 15 minutes after coming on, to beat Mathare United and hand Robert Matano’s side their first win of the season.

Mathare had their moments and will rue the chances they missed. Veteran striker John Makwata came closest in the 60th minute, when his curling effort from inside the box drifted wide. KCB opened their campaign with a 2-2 draw against Nairobi United last Sunday.

A Delayed Start and a Sponsor’s Message

The league kicked off a month late because of a dispute over promotion and relegation involving top-flight side Kariobangi and National Super League runners-up Mombasa United.

SportPesa chief executive Ronald Karauri said the league’s return lets clubs, players and fans focus on competitive football again. He added that the 10-year partnership with FKF is bringing more stability to the domestic game, and that the league will give emerging players a platform to gain experience and build their careers.

SportPesa launched its 10-year title sponsorship ahead of the 2025/26 season, with 60 per cent of the funds going directly to clubs through the Football Kenya Federation. The deal has brought monthly player and coach awards, improved broadcasts, a dedicated league website and Sh20 million in prize money for the top three clubs. SportPesa also has direct partnerships with Gor Mahia, Murang’a SEAL and Shabana.
