MTN8 semi-finals set as Pirates, Sundowns learn opponents

The MTN8 semi-final line-up is now confirmed, with defending champions Orlando Pirates set to face Sekhukhune United and Mamelodi Sundowns drawn against Golden Arrows.

The four teams booked their places in the last four after a dramatic round of quarter-final matches, with three of the ties requiring extra time to determine a winner.

Pirates had to work for their place in the semi-finals after overcoming Durban City 2-1 following an additional 30 minutes. The KwaZulu-Natal side played much of the contest with 10 men, but the Buccaneers needed a late goal from Ghampani Lungu to finally settle the tie.

Their semi-final opponents, Sekhukhune United, were involved in another high-scoring battle. Babina Noko defeated AmaZulu 4-3 after extra time, with Vuyo Letlapa finding the decisive goal in the additional period.

Sundowns also survived a tense encounter against Polokwane City at Lucas Moripe Stadium. The reigning champions eventually secured a 3-2 win, with Cassius Mailula marking his return by scoring the goal that sent Masandawana into the next round.

Golden Arrows completed the semi-final line-up by producing one of the biggest results of the quarter-finals.

Abafana Bes’thende knocked out 15-time MTN8 winners Kaizer Chiefs with a 1-0 victory at Moses Mabhida Stadium. Khulekani Shezi’s second-half goal was enough to separate the teams and bring Chiefs’ campaign to an end.

Pirates will now continue their pursuit of another MTN8 title against Sekhukhune, while Sundowns face an Arrows side that has already shown its ability to cause an upset.
