Zesco Ndola Girls Ready for Any Challenge as COSAFA Semi-Final Awaits
Zesco Ndola Girls are refusing to look too far ahead after completing a perfect group-stage campaign at the CAF Women’s Champions League COSAFA Qualifier in Botswana.
The Zambian champions booked top spot in Group A with nine points from three matches, finishing their campaign with a convincing 2-0 victory over hosts Gaborone United on Monday.
Florence Mwila’s side had earlier defeated Lesotho Defence Force 1-0 before producing a 5-2 win over Zimbabwean outfit Herentals Queens.
‘We are prepared’
Mwila was pleased with the way her players responded against Gaborone United, particularly given the quality of the opposition.
“It is sweet three points. We are here to play the game. We knew we were facing a tough opponent, so we needed to improve in relation to the approach,” Mwila said.
Despite their impressive run, the coach is not concerned about who stands between Zesco and a place in the final.
The Ndola outfit is expected to face either Silver Strikers of Malawi or Costa do Sol of Mozambique in the semi-finals, but Mwila insists there is no preferred opponent.
“There are no preferences, we play any team that come our way. We are prepared. This is a tournament so you meet any opponent and you must be prepared.”
Zesco chasing a bigger prize
The result also provided some measure of revenge for Zesco after Gaborone United defeated them in last year’s regional final.
This time, however, the Zambians have already beaten the hosts in the group stage and will now turn their attention to reaching the CAF Women’s Champions League finals.
Group B concludes on Tuesday, with Mamelodi Sundowns currently leading on six points, while Silver Strikers and Costa do Sol are both on three.
For Zesco, the message from Mwila is simple: the identity of the opponent does not matter — preparation does.
