Betway SA20 Preparations Stepped Up As Squads
Preparations for Season 4 of the Betway SA20 are officially underway, with all six franchises assembling their squads ahead of the tournament’s opening fixture between MI Cape Town and Durban’s Super Giants at Newlands on Friday, 26 December.
The league has confirmed updated team lists, with several high-profile returns, strategic replacements and youth call-ups shaping the build-up to another highly anticipated season.
Familiar return for Durban’s Super Giants
Durban’s Super Giants welcome back a trusted performer in Kane Williamson. The former New Zealand captain returns to Kingsmead after finishing as DSG’s leading run-scorer last season. Williamson replaces Bangladesh left-arm spinner Taijul Islam, adding experience and stability to the top order.
Squad adjustments at Joburg Super Kings
Joburg Super Kings have made multiple changes, calling up Matt de Villiers, Jared Bacher and Duan Jansen.
- De Villiers steps in for West Indies opener Brandon King.
- Bacher is a temporary replacement for England seamer Reece Topley.
- Duan Jansen fills the gap left by teenager Jorich van Schalkwyk, who has joined South Africa’s U19 squad for the ICC Men’s U19 World Cup.
Jansen brings SA20 experience, having previously represented MI Cape Town. Both Topley and James Vince are expected to rejoin the JSK squad later in the tournament.
MI Cape Town opt for continuity
Defending champions MI Cape Town have opted for a seamless switch, bringing back leg-spinner Thomas Kaber as a like-for-like replacement for Tabraiz Shamsi. Kaber returns to Newlands having already been part of the franchise in the previous two seasons.
Youth and pace bolster Paarl Royals
Paarl Royals continue to invest in youth, drafting in England teenager Thomas Rew as a temporary replacement for Dan Lawrence.
Former Sunrisers Eastern Cape fast bowler Okuhle Cele also joins the squad, stepping in for JJ Basson, who is heading to the ICC Men’s U19 World Cup.
Major reshuffle at Pretoria Capitals
Pretoria Capitals, under coach Sourav Ganguly, have been among the busiest since the auction.
- Shai Hope and Roston Chase replace Will Jacks and Bayanda Majola.
- England bowlers Sajid Mahmood and Craig Overton make way for Jordan Cox and Tymal Mills.
Cox is a previous SA20 winner with Sunrisers Eastern Cape, while Mills is set for his debut in the competition. Both Cox and Andre Russell will arrive late, with Keith Dudgeon and Daniel Smith named as temporary stand-ins.
Sunrisers forced into early change
Sunrisers Eastern Cape will be without Afghanistan spinner AM Ghazanfar during the opening stages of the season. Sri Lankan all-rounder Tharindu Rathnayake has been named as his temporary replacement.
With squads now locked in and preparations intensifying, SA20 Season 4 is poised for another action-packed edition — blending international pedigree, local depth and emerging talent as South Africa’s premier T20 league returns to centre stage.3
