Addo Sees Recording Breaking Penalty As Turning Point In Loss
With the whole fixated on Cristiano Ronaldo becoming the first to score in five different World Cups, Otto Addo feels the penalty score by the Portuguese was the turning point in Ghana’s 2-3 loss. Referee Ismail Elfath awarded Portugal the record-breaking penalty with the scores tied at 0-0 early in the second half.
“I think that up to that point, we really had a good match. We didn’t play our counters very well, but I think we defended well. I was hoping that second half, when they push more, we will have more space, but when they score the goal, the game changed,” a disappointed Addo said after the defeat.
Various angles of the play leading up to the penalty decision have only added fuel to the fire that erupted after Ghana’s loss to Portugal.
“I don’t know why VAR didn’t come up. There is no explanation for me, and it’s difficult player a world-class team when they are leading. It was very difficult to play against them, but we were brave,” added Addo.
Inaki Williams could have turned the bravery into a well-earned point, but he slipped after goals from Bukari, and the older Ayew had put Ghana back in the game. The Black Stars must now beat South Korea and hope Portugal’s luck continues against Uruguay to have a better chance of progressing from the group stage.
“Surely, it will be very, very tough to beat South Korea because they are good, but now we have to win. We are under pressure, but they are too,” explained the Ghanaian mentor.
