Amunike rubbishes Osimhen criticism as the strike sings his praises
Nigeria legend Emmanuel Amunike has rubbished the criticism labelled at him for apparently not voting for his protege, Victor Osimhen for the CAF Player of the Year award. This as Osimhen praised Amunike in his acceptance speech.
“I want to thank Emmanuel Amunike. Without him I would not be standing here today,” said Osimhen after being announced as the 2023 CAF Men Player of the Year.
The furore was started by a social media post which stated that Amunike had voted for Egyptian and Liverpool star, Mohamed Salah. This led to a lot of keyboard warriors heavily criticising the former Nigeria international for turning his back on a fellow countryman.
Amunike replied to the hail of insults through a WhatsApp group that he is part. Osasu Obayiuwana, a veteran journalist moderates the group that has a lot of influential scribes.
“I was never asked to vote,” stated part of the message by the 1994 Africa Player of the Year.
Amunike urged fellow members of the group to uphold good journalist ethics and report factually at all times.
“It has come a time in our culture in Nigeria – with all due respect to you guys, we should stop spreading false news and stop creating false impression to the people. We are journalists and our responsibility is to inform the public what is right,” wrote Amunike
