St George’s Park Set for Blockbuster 2026/27 Cricket Season
Nelson Mandela Bay is preparing for a major summer of cricket, with St George’s Park set to host a packed international and domestic programme while undergoing significant upgrades to one of South Africa’s most historic sporting venues.
The 2026/27 season promises plenty for cricket supporters, with four international fixtures scheduled at Dafabet St George’s Park as the Proteas and Proteas Women prepare for another demanding international campaign.
The first major assignment arrives in October when the Proteas host Australia in a five-day Test from 18–22 October 2026.
Australia’s strong support base in South Africa is expected to add to the atmosphere at the iconic Port Elizabeth venue, while the fixture could also provide a boost to tourism and the local economy.
South Africa will return to St George’s Park on 4 December for a One Day International against Bangladesh.
The venue will then turn its attention to women’s cricket, with India visiting Nelson Mandela Bay for a once-off Test from 9–12 December 2026.
The international programme concludes on 27 March 2027, when the Proteas Women face Australia in an ODI.
Historic venue undergoing major upgrades
While the international fixtures will headline the season, work is continuing behind the scenes to modernise St George’s Park without losing the character that has made the ground one of cricket’s most recognisable venues.
The historic Freilinghaus Stand, home to the famous St George’s Band, is currently undergoing a major refurbishment. Its old asbestos roof is being removed and replaced as part of the stadium’s ongoing investment programme.
A new drop-in pitch is also being installed alongside the existing playing surfaces, representing another significant development in the modernisation of the venue.
The upgrades are aimed at ensuring St George’s Park continues to meet international standards while improving facilities and the overall experience for players and spectators.
Warriors looking to build on strong season
The stadium will also remain an important base for domestic cricket, hosting fixtures across the three Cricket South Africa competitions.
The Dafabet Warriors head into the new campaign with momentum after winning the CSA T20 competition last season and reaching the final of the four-day competition.
With the squad already back in pre-season preparations, the Warriors will be hoping to turn that progress into another strong domestic campaign and give local supporters plenty to celebrate.
Sunrisers return for another SA20 campaign
January 2027 will bring the return of the SA20, with St George’s Park once again playing host to the Sunrisers Eastern Cape during the tournament’s fifth season.
The Eastern Cape franchise will be looking to make home advantage count as they chase another successful campaign in a competition that has quickly established a strong following in Nelson Mandela Bay.
The combination of international cricket, domestic competition and the high-energy SA20 atmosphere is expected to make St George’s Park one of the busiest sporting venues in the region throughout the season.
With Australia, Bangladesh, India and the Proteas Women’s opponents all set to feature, alongside the Warriors and Sunrisers Eastern Cape, cricket supporters in the Eastern Cape will have a full calendar to look forward to.
International tickets are already on sale, with a range of options available for supporters looking to watch the action at one of South Africa’s most historic cricket grounds.
