Kenya’s Raila Odinga International Stadium Nears Completion Ahead of AFCON 2027
Kenya has taken another major step towards hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with the Raila Odinga International Stadium now entering the final stages of construction.
The state-of-the-art 60,000-seat venue, being built at the historic Jamhuri Grounds along Nairobi’s Ngong Road, is expected to serve as Kenya’s flagship stadium during the continental showpiece, which the country will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
According to Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, the project is progressing well, with most of the major structural work already completed. Construction teams are currently focused on finalising key elements such as ICT systems, broadcast facilities and spectator amenities to ensure the venue meets international standards ahead of AFCON 2027.
Designed specifically for both football and rugby, the stadium promises an enhanced matchday experience, with seating positioned closer to the playing surface to create an electric atmosphere for supporters.
The venue’s striking architecture draws inspiration from Maasai culture, incorporating shield and spear motifs into its design while showcasing Kenya’s rich heritage on one of Africa’s biggest sporting stages.
Beyond aesthetics, the stadium is being equipped with cutting-edge technology, including a hybrid playing surface, smart stadium systems, solar-powered energy solutions and rainwater harvesting infrastructure as part of a broader sustainability strategy.
Omollo also revealed that government agencies are working closely to ensure the stadium is fully prepared to host major international events. This includes comprehensive security planning, crowd management systems, emergency response frameworks and multi-agency operational readiness for AFCON 2027.
With construction rapidly approaching completion, the Raila Odinga International Stadium is set to become one of East Africa’s premier sporting venues and a symbol of Kenya’s ambition as it prepares to welcome the continent for AFCON 2027.
The project represents a significant milestone in Kenya’s tournament preparations and underscores the country’s commitment to delivering a world-class football spectacle when Africa’s biggest football nations converge in East Africa next year.
