Queiroz Back at the Helm as GFA Reappoints Veteran Tactician for AFCON 2027 Push
The Ghana Football Association has confirmed the reappointment of Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the Black Stars, ending speculation over the veteran Portuguese tactician’s future ahead of a crucial qualifying campaign.
The announcement came on Wednesday, with the GFA revealing it had reached a fresh agreement with Queiroz after his previous four-month contract, signed back in April, expired a few weeks ago. With 2027 AFCON qualifiers fast approaching, the federation faced growing pressure to settle the coaching situation once and for all.
Queiroz previously led Ghana at the recent FIFA World Cup, where the Black Stars’ campaign came to a heartbreaking end following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the round of 32.
According to the GFA, the decision to bring Queiroz back followed discussions between the federation and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, with all parties agreeing that he would begin his new spell in charge during the upcoming international break.
The federation says it’s banking on Queiroz’s wealth of experience and deep understanding of the Black Stars set-up to steer the team forward, with further details on his role and Ghana’s upcoming schedule expected to be released in the coming days as both parties work on rebuilding a squad capable of competing at the highest level.
Tough Group Awaits
Queiroz’s rebuilding job won’t be easy — Ghana have been drawn in Group C for 2027 AFCON qualifying alongside three-time African champions Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia, and Somalia, with qualifiers kicking off this month.
Only the top two sides from each group will punch their ticket to the main tournament, co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania — a tournament Ghana will be desperate to reach after a painful absence from the last edition in Morocco.
With Queiroz back in the dugout and a stacked group ahead, the Black Stars now have a clear mission: get back among Africa’s elite, and fast.
