“Ready for Morocco”: Tanzania’s Coach Hemed ‘Morocco’ Suleiman Eyes Historic AFCON Run
Tanzania’s Taifa Stars return to the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 with renewed focus, confidence and a clear plan. Drawn into Group C alongside continental giants Nigeria, Tunisia and regional rivals Uganda, head coach Hemed “Morocco” Suleiman says his side is approaching the December tournament with “preparation, balance and belief.”
Speaking ahead of the team’s final preparation phase, Suleiman outlined a blueprint built on tactical discipline, set-piece precision and mental resilience — three qualities he believes will define Tanzania’s campaign in Morocco.
“We have taken lessons from 2019 and 2023 and applied them in training, match planning and selection,” Suleiman told CAFOnline. “Our aim is to arrive in Morocco sharp, focused and well-balanced — ready for even a stiff test.”
Sharper, Stronger, Smarter
Under Suleiman’s guidance, Tanzania have worked to modernise their football infrastructure and tactical identity. The coach credits the domestic rise of Simba SC, Young Africans (Yanga) and Azam FC for elevating player standards and instilling a competitive edge at national level.
The Taifa Stars have invested more in sports science, recovery, nutrition and psychology, areas previously overlooked. The result is a squad described by Suleiman as “more intense, composed and professional.”
“We want to aim for at least four points — that often makes one competitive for the knockout phase. Clean sheets are a benchmark of success. Set-pieces and transitions will be key — those small details decide tournaments.”
Group C: The Challenge of Giants
The road to qualification won’t be easy. Tanzania face Nigeria’s lethal attack, Tunisia’s tactical rigidity, and Uganda’s fierce regional energy — each opponent bringing a unique test.
“Nigeria punishes lapses in concentration, Tunisia is disciplined and hard to break, and Uganda’s rivalry brings intensity,” Suleiman explained. “We will tailor our approach per game, but without losing our identity.”
Experience Meets Energy
Suleiman insists that balance — not just form or flair — drives his squad selection. Veterans like Mbwana Samatta remain central to his plans, not only for goals but for leadership.
“Samatta is more than a striker — he’s a leader. His professionalism and humility lift the group. He bridges the staff and players, and gives our young ones belief.”
The coach also stressed the importance of depth and consistency, two lessons learned from Tanzania’s previous AFCON campaigns.
“In 2019 we learned that tournaments can overwhelm you if you’re not mentally ready. In 2023, we learned that fine margins and squad depth matter. Now we enter as a more hardened side.”
Fans, Faith, and the Future
As East Africa prepares to co-host AFCON 2027, Suleiman views the 2025 edition as a stepping stone toward building a long-term competitive identity. The team, he says, will draw strength from its passionate fan base.
“The fans are everything. Their songs, colours and energy make every game feel like home. We owe them pride and effort.”
And if the Taifa Stars advance beyond the group stages?
“That would be a historic milestone, but not the end. We want to reach the quarterfinals and build toward 2027. Each round strengthens our ambition — not just to qualify, but to compete consistently at this level.”
A Promise to Tanzania
In a final message to supporters, Suleiman was resolute:
“We’ll fight for every ball, respect the jersey and represent Tanzania with heart and dignity. We know what it means to carry the flag. We won’t back down.”
With a clear plan and unshakable belief, the Taifa Stars head into AFCON 2025 not just to participate — but to announce their arrival among Africa’s most disciplined and determined sides.
