Senong Hails Engen Knockout Impact
The road to discovering South Africa’s next football stars begins in Cape Town this weekend as the 2026 Engen Knockout Challenge kicks off at Erica Park in Belhar.
Running from 26 to 28 June, the prestigious youth tournament will bring together 32 teams from across the region, with 16 teams competing in the boys’ Under-18 division and 16 teams battling it out in the girls’ Under-20 category.
More than just a competition, the Engen Knockout Challenge has become one of the country’s most important football development platforms, producing numerous professional players and national team stars over the years.
Former South African youth national team coach Thabo Senong believes the tournament continues to play a crucial role in shaping the future of football in the country.
Having worked across Africa and coached at FIFA U-20 World Cups and CAF youth tournaments, Senong says few competitions can match the impact the Engen Knockout Challenge has had on youth development.
“The Engen Knockout Challenge is the cornerstone of youth football development in South Africa,” said Senong.
“Competition is essential because it allows players and coaches to measure themselves against the best. It gives young talent the opportunity to showcase their abilities while helping coaches benchmark their progress.”
The tournament’s theme, “Where Diski Legends Start,” reflects its reputation as a launchpad for future stars, with scouts, coaches and football stakeholders expected to closely monitor the action throughout the three-day event.
Defending champions Cape Town City FC will return looking to retain their boys’ title, while Cape Town Roses will begin the defence of their girls’ crown when they face Spurs WFC in Friday morning’s opening fixture.
Beyond the trophies and regional bragging rights, teams will also be competing for qualification to the prestigious Engen Champ of Champs tournament, where the best teams from across South Africa will battle for national supremacy later this year in Johannesburg.
With hundreds of talented youngsters eager to make their mark, Cape Town is once again set to become the focal point of youth football development as the next generation of South African stars chase their dreams on one of the country’s biggest junior football stages.
