CAF confirms important date on the road to AFCON 2025
CAF has confirmed an important date on the road to the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON 2025, to be staged in Morocco. The draw for the 35th edition of the continental football showpiece will be in Johannesburg.
“The journey to the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 will resume with the draw for the Qualifiers on Thursday, 04 July 2024, in Johannesburg, South Africa. The draw will be conducted at SuperSport studios in South Africa at 14h30 local time (15h30 Cairo time, 12h30 GMT),” a media release from CAF stated.
There has been speculation around the staging of AFCON 2025, with some pointing to a bloated international calendar. The expanded FIFA World Club Cup is set to be staged in June. Morocco were hoping to stage AFCON at around that same time. We might see the tournament being hosted in a brand new time of the year.
European clubs are not fans of the January hosting of AFCON as it falls at a crucial time of their seasons. This might force CAF to look at December because some European countries take a winter break.
CAF are coming from a very successful AFCON 2023 tournament, with new highs being set on and off the pitch. All and sundry will be hoping AFCON 2025 is even better with the draw being an important step.
