Sudan are soaring under Kwesi Appiah who has placed credit elsewhere
Sudan are soaring under Ghanaian coach Kwesi Appiah. While acknowledging his role, Appiah has pushed the credit for the success to an important group in the Sudan national team, the players.
“Whatever I try to show them, they are able to adopt easily. The players are doing very well, they are committed. Fortunately, I’m able to get some tips on the teams we are coming to play. I let them know their strong and weak areas, and so far, so good,” the 64-year-old said in an interview.
Sudan are on a solid run under Appiah, finding themselves top of group that includes former AFCON champions, DR Congo and Senegal. The team is unbeaten in six of their last seven games, something that was unheard of in Sudan before Appiah signed a three-year deal there.
Kwesi’s three wins and one draw in the World Cup qualifiers is quite remarkable considering there has been no local football in Sudan for some time due to civil unrest. The team plays all their home games out of the country. Not a single football pundit predicted Senegal would be trailing Sudan after four games.
With his team of Fatau Dauda and Ignatius Oseu-Fosu, Kwesi will now be looking for a similar run in the AFCON 2025 qualifiers which begin in September. Dauda, a former national team goalkeeper, has been key in Sudan stinginess in defence.
The draw for AFCON 2025 will be held in Johannesburg on the 4th of July. With Appiah in charge, Sudan will not be too worried about who ends up in the same group.
