Regragui Outlines Selection Criteria Behind Morocco’s AFCON 2025 Squad
Morocco head coach Walid Regragui has explained the thinking behind his squad selection for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, insisting that every decision was made using clear, objective and football-driven criteria.
Speaking in a statement published on the Royal Moroccan Football Federation’s official platforms on Thursday evening, Regragui said player selection is based on several key factors, including team cohesion, tactical understanding, dressing-room balance, performance levels and current form.
The Atlas Lions coach revealed that the final squad was the result of a long-term process that began more than 18 months ago, involving continuous monitoring and evaluation by himself and his technical staff.
Regragui acknowledged that there is no such thing as a “perfect squad,” but believes the group selected reflects the specific needs of the team as Morocco prepares to host the tournament amid high public expectations.
Reserve Selections Explained
The coach also addressed the inclusion of Hamza Igamane on the reserve list, describing the decision as a “calculated risk.” According to Regragui, medical assessments suggest the young forward’s recovery timeline could improve, making his inclusion a strategic option.
Youssef Belammari has also been named among the reserves, with Regragui confirming that the defender will remain with his club unless the national team requires reinforcement during the tournament.
Why No Press Conference?
Regragui further explained his decision not to hold a press conference to announce the squad, saying he wants to maintain full focus on the upcoming training camp.
He believes that the squad announcement alone was sufficient at this stage and that avoiding media engagements allows both staff and players to concentrate fully on preparation.
Confidence Ahead of Home AFCON
Regragui concluded by expressing strong belief in the squad’s ability to perform at a high level on home soil. He emphasized that the team will enter camp united, focused and determined to challenge for the continental title at AFCON 2025.
With expectations soaring, Morocco now turn their attention to final preparations as they aim to deliver a successful tournament in front of their home supporters.
