SAFA promises action against brawling teams in derby
The South African Football Association, SAFA, has promised to take action against two teams who were involved in an on-field derby game brawl live on national television. The association expressed its displeasure in a media release after footage of the incident from a Hollywoodbets Super League match spread on social media.
“The South African Football Association is disappointed by the violence displayed by players during the Hollywoodbets Super League match between Royal AM and Lindelani Ladies at the Princess Magogo Stadium, in KwaMashu,” read the release from SAFA.
The ladies from both Durban teams threw punches and kicks in front of cameras with the commentator giving a calm overview of events. Referee Hloniphile Msezane gave at least five players their marching orders as soon as the fight seemed to calm down. There is still no clarity as to what sparked the brawl.
“What was meant to be an entertaining KZN derby in women’s football, turned out to put the integrity of the women’s game in disarray. SAFA has received the Match Commissioner’s report following the incident caught live on SABC 1. The referee’s report will also be studied before the two teams are called into a Disciplinary hearing,” the statement from SAFA went on to say.
The game ended 2-1 in favour of Royal AM who might end up losing those hard-earned points with both teams in the bottom half of the Hollywoodbets Super League table.
