Samuel Eto’o not guilty of match manipulation, but does not escape punishment

Samuel Eto’o is not guilty of match manipulation, according to CAF. However, the FECAFOOT president did not escape without punishment from the world football governing body. CAF sanctioned the Cameroonian legend with a hefty fine for breach of ethics.

“Mr Eto’o was facing charges of alleged manipulation of football matches and violating the principles of ethics and integrity. The Disciplinary Board ruled that as it stands, there is insufficient proof to find Mr Samuel Eto’o Fils and Mr Valentin Nkwain guilty of match manipulation,” stated the CAF ruling.

CAF, however, took a dim view of Eto’o’s personal dealings with betting company, 1XBET. The former Barcelona striker is a brand ambassador, which was found to be in breach of CAF laws.

“However, the Disciplinary Board found Mr Eto’o to have seriously violated the principles of ethics, integrity and sportsmanship as provided in Article 2 paragraph 3 of the CAF Statutes by signing a Brand Ambassador contract with the company 1XBET in exchange for remuneration and consequently fined Mr Eto’o an amount of 200,000 USD,” part of the CAF ruling read.

Eto’o has been in the wars ever since taking over as FECAFOOT boss. The Association of Amateur Football Clubs of Cameroon has made it quite clear they do not want Eto’o leading the country’s football, throwing legal attacks one after another. The latest one being that Eto’o is not fit to be the FECAFOOT president because he once held Spanish citizenship.
