Sports Minister Khoza Happy With World Cup Bid

South Africa’s Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture Zizi Khoza has expressed happiness with the progress made in the country’s attempts to host the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Khoza met with the South Africa Football Association, SAFA, president Danny Jordaan who updated him on the bid. SAFA CEO, Lydia Monyepao accompanied Jordaan on the visit to Minister Khoza.

“I am very pleased with this update from SAFA, and the details around the progress and the work that has been achieved to date,” Minister Khoza is quoted as saying after the meeting.

Dr. Jordaan is now scheduled to brief and update a meeting of government ministers and MECs scheduled for the 8th and 9th of June in the city of Bloemfontein. SAFA’s bid to host the female version of the FIFA World Cup for the first time on African soil has already been endorsed by the regional body COSAFA and the continental football governing body of CAF.

Jordaan and his SAFA executive have already announced the wish to establish a professional women’s football league, and hosting the FIFA Women’s World Cup will go a long way in achieving this goal. South Africa is no stranger to hosting tournaments. In 2023, the country has already hosted the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup and will be staging the Netball World Cup in July.

“SAFA believes that hosting the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup will accelerate the professionalism of women’s football on the continent,” Jordaan told SAFA Media.

SAFA will now engage provincial governments and also visit various regional bodies in Africa to garner more support for the bid.
