Team First: Why Wiaan Mulder Fits Joburg Super Kings Perfectly
Wiaan Mulder’s name became impossible to ignore in 2025. The quietly spoken allrounder found himself at the centre of global cricket debate after declaring South Africa’s Test innings with himself stranded on 367 not out, just 33 runs shy of Brian Lara’s iconic 400.
As stand-in Proteas captain, Mulder’s decision divided opinion. For some, it was a missed shot at history. For others, it perfectly captured the essence of the man — a cricketer who has always placed the team above individual milestones.
At 27, Mulder has never chased headlines. And that same selfless mindset is exactly what he now brings to the Joburg Super Kings, as the franchise targets a breakthrough Betway SA20 final in 2026.
A Clear Role, A Clear Vision
Mulder says confidence within the Super Kings camp is growing, with a strong focus on mastering the small moments that often define T20 tournaments.
“These tournaments are about winning the small moments,” Mulder explained. “There are games where you feel slightly behind, but you find a way to win — that’s what makes the difference.”
That clarity of purpose was also reflected in the franchise’s auction strategy. After struggling in recent seasons to fill the seam-bowling allrounder role, head coach Stephen Fleming identified Mulder as the ideal solution.
“I think it was quite clear what they were looking for in someone like me,” Mulder said. “Batting in the middle order, bowling in the middle, maybe an over at the back end or in the Powerplay — just making an impact wherever I’m involved.”
A Homecoming at the Bullring
Mulder’s move to the Super Kings carries deep personal significance. The allrounder returns to the Wanderers, the venue where his professional journey began while still a schoolboy at St Stithians.
“Being back at home is really special,” he said. “It’s my favourite stadium in South Africa — probably in the world.”
Known as the Bullring, the Wanderers’ unique atmosphere continues to inspire him.
“The history speaks for itself. The fans feel like they’re right on top of you. The boundaries are short, the energy is insane, and it’s always high-scoring cricket — exactly what fans love.”
New Year’s Day Debut
That energy will be on full display when Mulder makes his home debut for Joburg Super Kings in the franchise’s first-ever New Year’s Day clash, hosting Durban’s Super Giants on Thursday.
For a player who thrives on contribution rather than acclaim, there may be no better stage — or setting — to begin his Super Kings chapter.
